Design for Lifestyle
I have done a lot of large scale landscape design but there's a special place in my heart for residential design. I love that I get to connect with my clients and I help them envision a landscape for their home that is designed for their lifestyle. By lifestyle I mean those things that make us who we are as a person and as a family. Maybe we like raspberry smoothies every day for breakfast. Why not grow our own raspberries. If we like to entertain our friends on the weekends why not a horseshoe pit and a place to hang out around the fire? Rock climber? Why not a climbing wall or slackline set up in your backyard?
We often think of our landscape as place for trees and shrubs, maybe a patio or a grill but we might not so often think of the true hidden potential of all of that extra space we have outside. Designing for lifestyle really starts with thinking about all of the little things we love, maybe sometimes not so little things, and conceiving of ways we can bring more of those things into our life through creative design. One think to consider is that you aren't making a list and then putting those things in your yard. What you are really doing is finding ways to creatively incorporate enriching experiences into your every day life.
This is where connecting with clients comes into play. We really focus on learning who you are; your hobbies, your memories, your passions. This is why making a big list of things is the wrong approach. We invariably end up with things in the end, but what things, how they are arranged and how that makes us feel is what gives our new space and our new relationship with it life.
Designing for lifestyle helps connect us to ourselves, and we end up with sweet new digs that we can climb on or that taste good.
